Actor and author George Takei is set to be inducted into Vroman’s Bookstore Walk of Fame on Saturday, November 21, at its Pasadena location. He will join a roster of distinguished authors previously honored by the bookstore.
Actor and author George Takei will be inducted into Vroman’s Bookstore Walk of Fame on Saturday, November 21, at the Pasadena bookstore located at 695 E. Colorado Blvd.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will take place outdoors on the Paseo, contingent upon weather conditions. During the event, Takei’s signature and handprint will be unveiled in concrete. The formal induction will be followed by brief remarks from Takei and a conversation with author Naomi Hirahara, who is also a member of Vroman’s Walk of Fame.
In a statement regarding the selection, Vroman’s cited Takei’s dual legacy as an author and public civil rights advocate. "Mr. Takei’s authorship and public civil rights work on behalf of all people, but particularly Japanese American and LGBTQIA+ folks, make him the perfect choice to join other authors with a strong connection to Vroman’s and the Pasadena community," the bookstore stated.
Takei joins a list of notable literary figures previously honored by the institution, including Lisa See, Naomi Hirahara, Lian Dolan, Walter Mosley, and Michael Connolly.
Best known for his portrayal of Lieutenant Commander Hikaru Sulu in the original "Star Trek" television series and six subsequent feature films, Takei has established a significant career as a writer and public advocate. He is a prominent voice for civil rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and the remembrance of the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans.
His 2019 graphic memoir, "They Called Us Enemy," written with Justin Eisinger and Steven Scott and illustrated by Harmony Becker, won an Eisner Award and became a New York Times bestseller. The book has since been widely adopted in educational settings, though it has also faced challenges in various school districts.
The bookstore is accepting RSVPs for the event through its website. Attendees are advised that an RSVP does not guarantee admission to the ceremony.
